Howdy everyone!
I'm new to this site and looking to learn more about paddling and fishing the Q.
Going up June 23 into Cache Bay and Kawnipi area. I've heard so much about the fishing and the spectacular scenery.
We'll be out for 9 days, just me and my paddlin' buddy, Jake.
I've been to the Dub many times, but decided that it was time to take it into the Q. So looking forward to it.
Talked with Debbie this afternoon and we've reserved lodging and a round trip tow.
Any input on great campsites anf secret fishin' spots would be appreciated... Promise, I won't tell a soul!!!
 Later,
 Ded

Hey Ded, glad to have you onboard.  I've not made it into Kawnipi, some of the others in here have and I'm sure you will hear from them, but I have camped several times just past Dead Man's portage in Saganagons.  Several islands there to camp on and several of them are really nice.  It's a great stopping place for your first night before you get into the falls chain, then the next day on in to kawnipi.  The fishing from there on is incredible, especially for Walleye around the falls.  You'll be going at the perfect time for large smallies also.  When you enter the channel which leads into the Falls chain you should start to catch Walleye.  We've caught several in that area that weighed 6 pounds and they've averaged around 25 inches for the rest of them.  It's an incredible Walleye area.  Sssshhhhh...remember, don't tell anyone.

Welcome Ded! Great to add new contributors. I'm already looking forward to your trip report. Lots of info already posted on the topics your interested in. If this warm early spring continues it should be an interesting June to say the least. Although you never know about the weather...last spring was pretty cold leading up to our late June trip, turned warm for the time we were up there and then back to cool rainy weather

One day I hope to get to Kawnipi to...now that my son is almost a teenager(ugh I feel old saying that) I think it will happen in the next few years.

Welcome Ded,

I've been through the Falls Chain many times and agree with all that Terry said.  We've always had great luck below any of the falls in any season! Below Canyon Falls especially.  It's so nice in there, small lakes (no wind!), nice campsites, current, great fishing and wildlife, that I've never made it up to Kawnipi. I've heard good reports though.  I've spoken with people who talked about fishing points and submerged islands in the "cross" area for walleye and BIG northerns.  Have fun and let us know how you do.

Glad you are on the board Ded!

I like several others here, have only been as far as Canyon Falls - it is an incredible area and you will want to take your time getting to Kawnipi and fish the area... absolutely tremendous fishing! Kawnipi has produced some incredible Walleye catches as well (KipOrby - chime in here ) You can make it from Cache Bay to the far side of Deadmans portage in a day and should be able to make Kawnipi (with fishing) in the 2nd day leaving you 4 days to fish Kawnipi. You will want to!

Again, welcome to the board. Hope you find the information you get here helpful for you trip!

Welcome Deb.  I've been to Kawnipi twice.

And based on my fishing experience the lake is fished out and no one goes there anymore.  Sorry, we caught them all last summer....

Anyways, the boyz above give good tips.  The fishing below the falls is awesome.  We have made it to Sidney Lake (not labeled on maps, but the lake after Bald Rock falls), both times on our way up to Kawnipi.  From there we've made it to McKenzie Bay the following day.

Check out my trip report if you are interested....
