I'm not sure where 24KGold's (Terry"s) link to YouTube went for his trip report??? Doesn't look like it stayed here - maybe still working on it? Hope you get it reposted - worth the time to watch it!

Dan, You have a beautiful daughter and lets hope that the BWCA seeds you are planting in her will cultivate to MANY, MANY more trips to the Northwoods

Hey Tom, I thought the links were not working, or at least when I clicked on them to see if they worked so I deleted the post to try to figure out what was wrong, but I guess they were working since you watched them.

We washed the dishes in the camp area and rinsed them in the lake before drying them.

I'll post the Youtube links again because I guess they were working after all.  Glad you liked the trip report.

Hey Dan, loved the pictures.  My wife grins from ear to ear when I show her your pictures.  Your daughter is a cutie and it's wonderful that you are teaching her to love and respect the outdoors at such an early age.  Keep it up.

Terry,
I'm just on part 2 of your trip, and already I've laughed my tail off!  Though I have to say, Gooseberry Falls was a trickle compared to some years...been dry up there, how were water levels?  We've been very wet and mild here in SE MN, think I've run the AC 6 times all summer!  Very unusual...

Nice videos Terry.  Looks like you caught some nice Walleyes!

What campsite did you stay at?

What were you catching the walleyes on ?

Hey Dan,

Glad you liked my report.  I know it was a non conventional report but if you knew me you would know that I usually do things a little bit differently.

The water was not as warm as it usualy is for that time of year, so the Walleyes were not in their summer patterns yet.  Instead of around humps and reefs during the daytime, they were scattered everywhere in about 10 to 15 feet of water.  All of the Walleyes we caught were either in the morning before noon, or in the evening after around 6:00.  Our daytime Walleyes were caught on crank baits trolling about 20 feet from shore.  Also took some on plastic jigs.  Our evening Walleyes were taken on crank baits, a spoon, and believe it or not, two large Walleyes were caught on a top water stick bait.  We had great luck, but when you are there in August they will be around humps and reefs in the daytime and then off of points in the late afternoon and evenings.  The only time I have caught Walleye in Quetico during the daytime is when we were able to use nightcrawlers and we drifted past humps and picked up several.  Two summers ago I caught a few on jigs with a grub trailer.  Anything with orange color on it seemed to work well.  Crayfish up there have orange on their pincers and tail, maybe that's why that color worked so well for us in the summer.

That's all I know about catching Walleye in Quetico.  The main trick is to just simply find them first, then you will probably catch several in that spot.  Fish windward points during the daytime at about 20 feet depth.  Actually, just try anything and keep trying and most of all, be patient.

The campsite where we stayed doesn't appear to be on any maps.  Just past Dead Man's portage, hang a right and if you look at your map, you'll see a long island that runs kind of east and west.  We camped on the west end.  Someone who had camped there just before us had cut down some dead trees and had messed up the camping spot just a bit.  I guess some people can't go camping without having to chop down something.  The spot is still a nice place.  By the end of the week, some critter had gone through the woods and had dug up all of our business and it made it look really messy.  We did our best to fix it.  Anyone have any idea what animal would have enjoyed digging up our spots?  I've never seen that happen before.

Have fun when you go in August.  I think I'll plan a late August trip next year for a change.

Terry

cspatten,

glad u are enjoying the vids.  I can't do anything normally so I had to make them a little humorous if possible.  I hope u enjoy the rest of them.

The water levels seemed to be about average, however the water temps were a little bit cooler than usual.  The water was about 15 degrees warmer than the same time last year though.  Wasn't as bad to get into for the mid week bath.

Hey Boys!  The trip to Kawnipi was awesome.  Great weather, great fishing and wonderful route.

Orgasmic is how I'd describe the fishing.  Trolling the shores of Kawnipi around points and islands worked great to find the fish and then jigging w/ twister tails (brown and orange or charteuse) sealed the deal.  I've never seem so many monster fish on a trip.
Walleye:  25" was the longest w/ several in the 20's.  Pike:  41", 38" and several in the low 30's.  Bass:  Many 4 pounders and even a 5 pounder.

The campsites in McKenzie Bay on Kawnipi are all nice.  We had a site w/ a table and a great 270 degree view on a massive rocky point.  We watched the Perseids Meteor shower evernight.  Blessed w/ fantastic sunsets and sunrises everyday.

Kawnipi is just that good.  Scenery, fishing, etc. etc. etc.  You all MUST go.

Sounds great Kip and I'm already sold but not sure if I'm up to loading / unloading the canoe, what 10 times Even during our trip this year I was scrutinizing all our gear thinking of all kinds of ways to downsize for a trip like this for next year.

Wow, looks like the water level is way down again?

Dave,
I can tell you from experience that you get really efficient at loading and unloading.  Also, really good at making sure you've brought all your equipment through the portage (especially after a 1hr round trip to go back for a tackle box!)

Great reports Dan!

Thinking about that Kawnipi trip for us for next year.

The scenery looks great but I thought I read there was a lot of past fire damage in the area. Appartently from your photos there's still a lot of
healthy mature forest in the area?

Dave, the fire you are referring to was the Bird Lake Fire of 1995.  It starts in Saganagons and follows the north side of the falls chain all the way to Kawa Bay in Kawnipi.

Now it is tons of trees all 15-20 feet tall.  I wouldn't really consider it fire damage anymore but a young forest.  Pretty neat to see actually and not a negative at all in mind.

The south side of the Falls Chain and most of Kawnipi (north of Kawa Bay) is all really mature forest.

Glad you liked my reports.  Thanks.
