Zephyr Lake trip?

I have been intending to go to Ottertrack & base camp out of Little Knife sites, but I have been thinking about checking out Zephyr Lake. I see there is one site on the lake, and one site near the mouth of the lake. Has anybody used either of these sites, and if so, how was the fishing?

Is there much traffic on this lake?

We will get on the water during the middle of the first week of August.

Thanks,
John

Forum: BWCA Routes and Lakes

Does anyone put much merrit in the Solunar Tables? We're trying to plan a trip...I'm trying to plan around Solunar...but buddy seems to be opposite weeks available.

We're trying to squeeze in a trip still this year, and trying to target fishing as #1 priority!

We have 5 day windows available it seems like that work with the solunar tables:

July 25-July 29

Aug 11-15 (tailing end of solunar)

Sept 6-10

Sept 20-25 (Seagull is closed)

We have another couple of options that do not relate to solunar:

August 14-20

Aug 28-Sept 2

Sept 12-19

Any help would be appreciated...plus...I am assuming late August fishing is better than late September...thoughts?

Greg

Forum: All things Fishing

I recently read a article in the Forum about how people are not doing the week long trips anymore. It was also about how permit sales have declined over the past 5 years.

Have you seen much of a decline over the past couple years?

I am glad that our group is doing a week long trip, it is going to be a crazy experience! Only 9 more days!!

Forum: General Questions and Advice

Where to go?

I haven't been up there since 2005 so I don't know how the fires affected the areas around Seagull and Alpine. This year I am bringing up my Wife and Girls who are green as can be and want them to experience the big woods. We are only going out 3 nights, so I want to base camp the first day and "day trip" the remaining time. I will always use seagull outfitters, but is there a different entry point or route I should look into for a good first time experience for the girls? Willing to try anything.

Forum: BWCA Routes and Lakes

BWCA/Quetico Fishing Info Online

Got a general question for everyone.

How well in general do you feel you're able to gather fishing info for specific lakes in the bwca or quetico from resources online?

What type of fishing info are you usually looking for when you're going to be visiting a new lake you've never been before?

Trying to do a bit of marketing research about how well this need is currently being met. And you're a pretty informed and experienced group...I value your opinions.

Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

Johnse
Forum: All things Fishing

2010 Quetico Trip Pictures

Well, here they are gang. After flagging close to 200 from the original bunch and then going back to narrow that group down I've come up with these from our recent 2010 Quetico base camping trip on Saganagons.

The lack of sun this year for pic taking was kind of a bummer.

There must be an easier way to edit all these pics in order to make them legal for the size limit but what that is I don't know.

Hope you enjoy...

Dave

Forum: What the Canoe Country Does for you

Structure on Saganaga near Cache Point

You know I've passed by Cache Point on Lake Saganaga/Cache Bay on six different trips and coming out yesterday was the first time I noticed a small log structure about 30-50 yards from the point some what hidden in the trees on the north shore of Sag. Walked up there and it appeared to be an old broken down 2 hole poop house. Actually, it wasn't all that small and made from logs...seemed like a lot of work for just a poop house.

Anybody know any history about the place??? Was there once also a cabin on this site? This old history really fascinates me.

Working on those pics, standby...

Dave

Forum: General Questions and Advice

Ideas for alternative on upcoming trip.

Ok, I have a issue that might require having us to look into an alternative for our trip to the Quetico with a Boundary Point permit.

I don't want to get into too much of the reason right now online but I might not be able to portage a canoe, actually getting it over my head I think is going to be the hardest part and I'm pretty sure my 12 year old is still too young to portage an Alumnacraft. I have an idea how I might be able to but not sure if it will work. Portaging packs and other gear shouldn't be too bad only the canoe with what's going on.

So, anyone have any ideas for checking in at Cache Bay and base camping some where in the area without having to portage? Any options west of Cache Bay on Saganaga? I'm thinking my options are really limited at this point? We're scheduled to be on the water for 11-12 days and hope we don't get bored if I can't portage the canoe.

I would imagine I would need to change the permit? Back in 2008 I was very concerned about the heavy outflow of Silver Falls with my young son. For an alternative if I wanted the ranger suggested going towards Ottertrack (I think) and she would change the permit that morning. However, in the end we kept to our original plan without problems.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Forum: Quetico Routes and Lakes

August trip

Just reserved my permit for August 3rd - 12th for the BWCA. Wanted to try Quetico this year, but it will have to wait til next trip. Getting the tow to American Point and will work through Saganaga down through Ottertrack, maybe day trip to Gijikiki for lakers. Last year we were going to do that route, but found a beautiful site along the way in Saganaga that faced West, and fishing was so good we just based there all week.

Taking two 17 year olds & an 18 year old that play baseball together, and they love to fish. Two newbies, and they are excited with all the stories & photos of past trips. Real nice kids.

Any recommendations for sites along this route? I can say I've based camped at the Little Knife portage site (I think there are 4), and stayed at Giji for a couple nights. Did the Giji loop in 2007, but that's more work & less fishing than I'm looking for.

Anybody else going in during that time?

John

Forum: BWCA Routes and Lakes
